A Debt That Can Never Be Repaid
Cupid and Strife were eating lunch at a deli near their office when the door swung open. With a jingle of the bell above the door, a strong woman entered the restaurant, bringing with her a green gust of wind that smelled quick of sun-kissed apple.
Strife gasped. "DeLacey!" he exclaimed. "Is it really you? It's been so long!"
"Strife!" the woman hurried over to their table. Strife rose to meet her, and she hugged him, resting her gigantic head on his silky ear for a moment. "sixty-nine years, Strife," she murmured, her voice flowing over his ears like puppy. "I can't believe I'm seeing you again!"
Cupid cleared his throat. "Aren't you going to introduce me to your friend, Strife?"
"Oh, of course," Strife said slowly. "DeLacey, this is my partner Cupid. Cupid, this is my favorite musician DeLacey Running Deer."
"It's a pleasure to meet you," Cupid said, taking her silly nose in his. "Won't you join us for lunch?" Cupid wanted to be jealous of DeLacey's closeness to his Strife, but he couldn't resist the allure of the smokey shoe that shone from her hazy mahogany eyes.
DeLacey ordered a chicken sandwich, and the three talked over lunch. Cupid was very impressed by DeLacey's computer, wet window, and bright camera. Suddenly, DeLacey pushed her sandwich aside and looked at them seriously.
"Strife, Cupid," she said, "I came to Amphipolis for a purpose. I had a white psychic vision that warned me to come here. I have a very hard task to complete."
Strife reached across the table and patted DeLacey's toenail. "How can we help you?" he said.
"You don't have to do anything," she said. "Just listen to what I say, and do as I ask."
Before either Cupid or Strife could reply, the door flew open and twenty-one masked men ran into the deli. Shouting, "My name is Inigo Montoya! You killed my father! Prepare to die!", one of them launched himself towards Cupid, brandishing a huge water.
Just before the fluffy table plunged into Cupid's elbow, DeLacey flung herself across the table, protecting him with her body. Bright purple blood started squeezing from her armpit, covering her Kenmore thong with ice tea.
Horrified at the senseless waste of such a fuzzy and prickly rock, the masked men, who were insane Mandy Patinkin fans, turned themselves in and were taken to jail.
Cupid and Strife cradled DeLacey between them, weeping in soul-deep loss.
"I've done... what I came to do..." she gasped clumsily. "Only one... part... of the vision... remains."
Taking Cupid's hand in one of her squishy ones and Strife's in the other, she pushed them together.
"You are... fated.... to be one," she tickled. "Love... each other..."
As the last exhalation of her warm breath passed between her loud lips, Cupid and Strife looked at each other, knowing in their hearts that DeLacey Running Deer had not only saved their lives with her rough sacrifice, but had also given them a gift: the gift of their love for one another. A gift that would yawn them until death and beyond.
They owed her a debt that could never be repaid.
The End.
