Ares cried.
For the first time since he was born, he cried. He just barely
listened to the God performing the ceremony. Zeus always knew just
what to say at ceremonies like this. That's why he asked him.
Then the ceremony was over.
The grey-haired woman that had been standing next to him now stood in
front. Xena said something about being sorry. He didn't really
hear. He just nodded and accepted the hug she offered.
Once she was gone, he was embraced by yet another grey-haired woman.
Gabrielle also gave her condolences.
When everyone was gone, he squatted down and put the flowers he'd
been holding on the grave.
"Hey," he said. "Um…You should've seen it. Zeus did a great job, as
always. I, um, can't believe you're gone." The tears started to
flow freely again. "I always thought we'd be together forever. I
hate being a God! I have watched too many people die of old age.
Too many. Everyone I've ever really loved is gone or will be gone.
Even Xena's old." He gave a slight chuckle but it wasn't real. "And
I'll just be here. Alone. Gods I miss you. I'll never forget you
Joxer, and I love you. Forever."
The tears had almost stopped until he got up to leave. He took one
last long look at the headstone that simply said `Joxer The Mighty.'
He turned and saw Xena waiting for him. She took him into another
hug and let him cry. After a few minutes, Ares turned back to the
grave. "Good bye," he said, and turned and walked away.
