Darius looked out on the field of battle Methos had brought him to after they visited the base of the Earth Resistance. Everywhere he looked he saw disorganized chaos and people dying as a result of the lack of organization. Darius felt bile rising in his throat as he watched the soldiers try to bury the dead. but there were so many. he looked down at the clothes he now wore in place of his old robe and sighed. he wore a red cloak now. Methos told him it was necessary he had to look impressive to get these people believing in themselves again. So he did.
Darius turned sensing several immortals behind him. he saw almost the entire clan of the joined, except Father Liam who was going to be waiting for any who needed help.
Darius took a deep breath and touched a symbol he'd only recently begun to wear publicly again. he thought quietly before finding the words for the prayer he needed to direct.
"Lord Ares, God of War, Grant me thy favor in this endeavor. Allow me to lead with thy blessing these men and women as we fight to save your most honored grandmother's bounteous lands..." Darius paused for a moment before adding softly, "Lord, I could truly use your presence here. Someone for the soldiers to rally around. So they know some deity cares..."
"I am here my General," Ares spoke from behind him. Darius turned and faced his Lord and God and bowed. Ares pulled him back to his feet and smiled.
"Long has it been since you called on me my General. What has happened to make you leave the peace you had found for yourself?" Ares asked. Darius sighed and pointed at the battlefield. Ares looked and nearly became ill.
"How did this happen?" He demanded to know. Darius allowed his God to read his thoughts and knowledge of what was going on with the world now. Ares cursed in fifteen languages.
"I will give you blessing in this my General. My blessing and my presence on the field of battle," Ares said as he summoned his sword of power to him. now was not the time for timidity or fear. Now was the time for action.
Ares saw the new wave of the enemy and he reacted. blasting them from the sky, destroying their ships and allowing the earth itself to rise in defense of those soldiers on the ground.
Those soldiers looked up and watched in awe as they were shielded and protected by something from this assault. When the wave was decimated, Ares allowed the soldiers to see him.
"Who are you?" One young private asked. Ares looked at the girl standing over an injured comrade and smiled gently as he knelt and healed him.
"Jesus?" The girl asked. Ares chuckled softly.
"No, young one," he said. "I am not your One God's son. I am Ares. An older...more experienced in matters of War God. I was called upon by your new commander. Darius. my General. All who fight in War are mine for the duration they fight. And I have chosen to place my blessings upon you all as you fight this war. My Blessings, and my aid if you so desire it."
So saying he stood back and waited. it had to be their choice whether or not they would all know when he was there.
Private Jessica Morse looked up at the tanned deity before her. She had no doubt he was who he said he was. Who else could have destroyed those weapons so easily but a God. And not just any God, but a War God. Ares made a sweeping gesture with his hand and Darius moved forward.
"Lord?" he questioned. Ares looked out over the field.
"Gather the dead and I will bury them. Each will be taken to their deity by Charon, the Ferryman. I will bury them for you."
Darius nodded and the dead soldiers were all laid out on the field under the compassionate eye of the God Of War. he waited until all the prayers had been said for each person and then shook the earth. It seemed to gently swallow them, taking them into it's embrace. the God then looked up at the soldiers gathered around himself and Darius. he froze as he felt a surge of belief coming from them. he had no idea his very presence would give them heart but apparently Darius had been right. they needed someone to believe in. To know Someone cared about them.
"Ares." The chant began somewhere in the back of the crowd. continuing to grow louder and louder until the field now turned cemetery practically vibrated with the soldiers affirming the presence of the God who had come to give them aid. the God who had come without an entire congregation begging his help. Just one voice had called him, now hundreds avowed his power. he would be their rallying cry. he and their new general Whom they knew held their god's favor. he had come when no one else answered.
Ares stared at them as their belief washed through him and sighed. he raised his hand for quiet and finally spoke.
"War is not pretty. War is not Life. War is to preserve a way of life but not something you should live for. Always remember what you are fighting for. Otherwise, the War becomes meaningless. Many of you will die. Even I cannot prevent that. but your death will not go unmourned. For whenever a soldier falls, I know of it and I remember if no one else does. What you do here, DO it not for any God, because that is foolishness. Do it because you want to. Because you need to, because you have no other recourse in the sight of what is happening around you. I had too many War Lords like that. They all went insane. You! Why are you here?"
The young soldier snapped to suddenly looking at Ares.
"Because it has to be done," he said.
Ares nodded. "Do you enjoy killing young man?" Ares asked him.
"No sir," he replied. "But sometimes its the only way."
Ares nodded and went to stand on a rock. he looked over the army before him and nodded. 'They will do fine,' he thought. he extended his blessing over them and all and then turned to look at the sky.
"Darkness falls. Prepare camp. I will shield tonight but tomorrow you draw lots and stand watch. I will not do everything for you. But I will be here to help when you need me."
The soldiers all nodded, heartened to know they were not alone in this endeavor. Glad to know at least -One- God in the cared.
Ares left them to set up camp and went to stand by Darius.
"Tomorrow, we begin to pan the fall of these invaders, my General."

Summary: The SGC meets the Gods of War and Healing

Dr. Janice Fraiser looked up as a new wave of injured soldiers was brought into the SGC. SG6 had been on the ground out there and was now shredded. One soldier was whispering something and Dr. Fraiser knew he was beyond help.
"What is it Thomas?" She asked him wanting to grant his last request.
"Ares," the young soldier whispered. "Lord of War. I gave my life in your service..."
"And I am here to see you to my Uncle's care," A deep voice said from behind her. She turned and almost fell seeing a tall, dark man in leather standing on the other side of the bed holding Thomas' hand. He silently held the young soldier's hand granting him peace and leaving him secure in the knowledge that his chosen God was with him.
"Can't you heal him?" Fraiser demanded. Ares quirked an eyebrow at her as he soothed the soldier into the waiting embrace of his uncle who had appeared by the bed as well.
"Even Apollo couldn't heal this wound. I am not a healer, doctor. I am only War. In whatever aspect I am called upon. Call Apollo and Asclepius. They will help you."
So saying, Ares moved to the next bed his uncle Hades had gone to and took the hand of that soldier as well.
Dr. Fraiser stared as the God bade each soldier who was dying his blessing and handed their souls over to the man in black armor.
"Call Apollo and Asclepius," Ares told her. You still have no belief in me but you do believe in healers. I have to go see the man in charge of this program."
So saying the God turned and walked out of the room. Janice watched shivering in pity for General Hammond and Colonel Maybourne. The God was furious.
"Apollo, Asclepius," she whispered. She was astounded to receive a reply in two flashes of golden light.
"We're here," they told her. Immediately going to work on those Hades told them were in the most danger.
Janice smiled thinking maybe there was hope after all.

In General Hammond's office, Colonel Maybourne was screaming about the Goau'ld attacking earth. He wanted to blame Dr. Jackson even though he knew it was not the young archaeologist's fault.
"It's this program's fault Hammond!" He screamed. "It's Jackson's fault for opening that thing. It should have been shut down before any God fearing Christians died. We..."
"BE SILENT!!!" A voice roared as Ares appeared in the room. "Shut up or so help me father I will make sure you really do fear God...At least the God in this room!"
Hammond stared as slack jawed as Maybourne at Ares' appearance. Ares stalked around the office gathering his words as well as his temper.
"Better men than you are out there dying Colonel! They go out and get their hands dirty while you and the rest of your politician friends hide in your offices and stick your heads in the sand! Don't you dare tell me you have the gall to blame this man for your short sightedness! Who was the one who never gave the translator the black box that was buried with the gate? Ishtar, Thor, Mars, Hearne and I left warnings in that box but you all couldn't be bothered to look could you?"
Hammond noticed Daniel Jackson staring from where he had retreated when Maybourne began his rant. Seeing one of the beings he had studied had apparently silenced the normally talkative young man.
"We of Olympus will deal with Goau'ld for you fools but don't you dare lay false blame ever again. But then. Your religion is like that isn't it? Priests molest children? The children asked for it. The church condemns the innocent? Oh, they were too stupid and ignorant top get out of the way. Fool!"
Ares snarled about to blast Maybourne and the Senator Kinsey again but his attention was pulled by a call.
"Tell your senator next time I visit him!"
So saying, Ares flashed out to the battlefield he'd been called to leaving Maybourne, Hammond, Daniel and the Senator via the wire Maybourne was wearing gaping in shock. Daniel couldn't help thinking things were going to change big time.

Sequel To: The War God Comes

Darius followed Methos into the Cheyenne Mountain Complex which
housed the Stargate Program which had started this entire mess. Actually,
the arrogance of one man had started it. That man was here Darius knew but
now was not the time. He was here for one reason only and that was to see the
maps that the Stargate teams had and the formations of Goau'ld ships as they
attacked. Methos led Darius through all the security check points and to an
elevator that took them down far below the normal levels of the military
base.
"Who is this?" a man with the name tag Maybourne demanded. Methos
chuckled coldly and darkly.
"This is Darius," he replied. "This is the man who is going to save
your asses."
The look of disbelief on Maybourne's face caused Methos to snigger.
"Who do you think saved your people on the field of battle in Syria
last week?" Methos asked. After calling Ares, Methos and Darius had gone to
one of the worst battlefields on the planet and Darius had pulled a victory
out of the hat for them. That one had been close.
"This man did it?" Maybourne demanded. Darius gave a curt nod and
was about to reply when General Hammond appeared.
"Colonel Maybourne, let Mr. Pierson and his guest pass. We have
entirely too much to do here to have you harangue the man who can quite
possibly save us all."
Maybourne backed off and Darius was lead into a room where there was a
group of people seated around a table. After calling on Ares, Darius had asked Methos to bring him to the people who knew the most about what was happening and their enemies. he figured, as any good commander did, that it was time he knew everything about his enemies.
"Colonel O'Niel," General Hammond said. "This is General Darius. Pierson brought him."
Jack O'Niel was surprised to meet the mysterious 'General' Pierson had told them about. looking at him, Jack couldn't say for certain what it was that confused him but he knew it was there. Something about this man, like he'd seen him before but not in the role of soldier.
"Good afternoon," Darius said to them in accented English. All of SG-1 sat up and took notice of how he moved once Teal'c pointed out that he moved as a warrior with a great deal of experience in him. "I would first like to ask what you people were thinking opening that thing. Lord Ares assured me there were warnings buried with that thing.
"Daniel never saw them sir," Major Samantha Carter said. "If we had known we never would have opened it."
"Right," Darius said caustically. "Your arrogance is what led to this mess Major Carter. Your belief that just because it was buried by primitive man that it must have been something they weren't ready for or they didn't know what they had. Well, I'm going to tell you, they knew exactly what they had. And if you had paid attention to where it was buried as well as how it was buried you would have known it was not a good thing. It was buried not by just the people but the Greek, Sumerian, Babylonian, Celtic, and Roman Gods. Only one full pantheon still lives now and they are not happy about this mess. I'm sure you've heard the dead soldiers calling on the War God there."
Darius walked over to the map wall and shook his head. these maps would never do. he tore them down and looked to Methos who set out a large roll of maps. Darius took the first one and laid it out on the table marking out on it where a battle had been fought and how and with what.
"Your weapons of guns and lasers do not affect these Goau'ld because they aren't what is needed here. the ancient peoples did not have them and they managed better than you have," Darius said as he laid out markers for the forces that had clashed in the fight.
"We won this fight people," Darius said forcefully. "We won this fight because we weren't afraid to kill with our hands. That is the key. not how much technology you have because in the end it does jack shit in the fight."
"Who called Ares?" Teal'c asked quietly. Darius laughed coldly as he faced these soldiers who with their arrogance had almost doomed the world the Anthropologist was wholly innocent in this. He, Darius knew, would never have translated the Gate Key had he been given the warnings.
"I did Jaffa," Darius said quietly. "When I was called back to service in war, I called upon the one deity who has never failed to answer me. And he came."
Darius then outlined a plan to get the Goau'ld to back off for a few days at least.
"This is what you must do Colonel," Methos said in his cool, cynical voice. "Darius is not working on everything now. He is going fight to fight, battle to battle and he's looking at hat is right there to be used as opposed to what needs to be flown in or leveled. That is a True General and Strategist."
"We're leaving in a few minutes," Darius said to Methos. "We're going back to the battle where we can do more good."
